Relief and Development

We work to meet needs of slum residents through a combination of relief and development.  On one hand, construction of transitional housing provides shelter and relieves families from urgent problems such as inclement weather, health hazards and other dangers.  On the other hand, our social inclusion programs go beyond such immediate relief to focus on long-term skill development, allowing slum dwellers to break out of the cycle of poverty.

Individuals in Charge of their Own Development

Throughout our programs we focus on the individual, family unit or community but always aiming towards personal empowerment.  Our programs are not handouts, but rather work to empower individuals with the tools to take charge of their own future.

Link with Formal Networks

Un Techo para mi País recognizes that an important aspect of breaking the cycle of poverty is reinserting slum dwellers in formal and informal networks.  We strive to connect the millions of individuals who live in poverty to networks of employment, healthcare, education, legal aid, etc., and programs offered by the local government and other community organizations.

Volunteer-Settler Encounter

Our programs begin and end with an encounter between young volunteers and those living in conditions of extreme poverty.  By connecting these two often-divided sectors of society, we break down social barriers, stereotypes and divisions that have historically led to polarization and inequity.

Holistic Approach

Programs are designed for all ages of individuals, families as a unit, and the community as a whole.

Multidimensional Approach

Our five areas of programming (Education, Economic Development, Legal Aid, Recreation and Culture, and Health Care) allow us to attack poverty from multiple sides.
